School board members elected or appointed after June 13, 2011 must complete a minimum of 4 hours of professional development training covering education and labor law, financial oversight, fiduciary responsibilities, and trauma-informed practices for students and staff.

Trauma-informed practices training must include recognition of trauma in students and staff, the relationship between staff wellness and student learning, effects of trauma on behavior and learning, prevalence of trauma among at-risk student populations, effects of bias on recognizing trauma, and effective district practices to prevent and mitigate negative effects of trauma.

School districts must maintain on their internet websites the names of all voting board members who have successfully completed the required training.

Licensed school personnel and administrators in kindergarten through grade 12 must be trained at least once every 2 years to identify warning signs of mental illness, trauma, and suicidal behavior in youth, with training on trauma-informed practices satisfying this requirement.

The State Board of Education may adopt rules necessary to administer the provisions of the school board member training requirements.
