• Amends the first degree murder statute to require that when acting alone during a forcible felony, a person must personally cause the death to be convicted of murder, rather than merely killing someone during the felony.

• Establishes a new standard for felony murder when acting with others: a person is guilty only if another participant causes death and the person knew that participant would engage in conduct resulting in death or great bodily harm.

• Changes statutory language from "is attempting or committing" a forcible felony to "commits or attempts to commit" a forcible felony in the murder elements.

• Adds natural life imprisonment as a sentencing option for murders of physicians, physician assistants, psychologists, nurses, or advanced practice registered nurses killed in the course of performing their professional duties.

• Maintains existing death penalty aggravating factors and sentencing procedures while modifying the foundational felony murder definitions.
