• State policemen may convert service credit earned under the State Employee Article to eligible creditable service under the alternative retirement annuity formula by filing a written election and making specified contributions.

• The conversion of service credit is not subject to the 12-year limit on eligible creditable service that normally applies.

• State policemen may establish up to 5 years of eligible creditable service for prior work as municipal police officers (under IMRF), county corrections officers, or court services officers by filing an application and making specified contributions.

• Any benefit increase resulting from these amendments is excluded from the definition of "new benefit increase" and therefore not subject to the 5-year expiration requirement.

• The act becomes effective immediately upon enactment.
