SB2535 Summary

• Licensed pharmacists shall dispense opioid antagonists (including naloxone) in accordance with written standardized procedures developed by the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Department of Public Health, and Department of Human Services.

• Pharmacists must inform patients that opioids are addictive and offer to dispense opioid antagonists before dispensing opioids.

• Prescribers who issue prescriptions for opioids must inform patients that opioids are addictive and that opioid antagonists are available by prescription or from a pharmacy.

• Physicians may issue up to 3 sequential 30-day prescriptions for Schedule II controlled substances (totaling a 90-day supply) if each prescription is issued for legitimate medical purposes and the physician documents medical necessity in the patient's medical record.

• Emergency medical services personnel may administer Schedule II, III, IV, or V controlled substances without a written, electronic, or oral prescription from a prescriber.
