SB2542 Summary

• Amends Section 10-10 of the Illinois School Code concerning boards of education and makes a technical change to the language.

• Applies to school districts with populations between 1,000 and 500,000 inhabitants that are not governed by special acts, requiring a 7-member board of education.

• Board members serve 4-year terms (or 6-year terms if voters approve), must be U.S. citizens age 18 or older, Illinois residents for at least one year, registered voters, and cannot be child sex offenders or previously removed from school boards.

• Establishes procedures for filling board vacancies: remaining members must notify the regional superintendent within 5 days and fill the vacancy until the next regular school election, unless less than 868 days remain in the term or 88 days before the next election.

• Allows boards of education to appoint a student member in an advisory capacity without voting privileges and prohibits student participation in executive sessions.
