SB4206 Summary

• Creates a new "line of duty disability annuity" for police officers under the State Universities Retirement System (SURS) equal to the greater of 65% of salary or the retirement annuity they would receive, replacing standard disability benefits.

• Covers police officers disabled from sickness, accident, or injury resulting from duty performance, including heart disease, stroke, tuberculosis, and respiratory diseases from police service.

• Provides that disabled police officers with 7+ years service and 20+ total years (service plus disability period) receive annual 3% noncompounded increases if they file annual affidavits showing no earned income.

• Allows line of duty disability annuity to continue to survivors upon the officer's death while still disabled, in lieu of standard survivor insurance benefits unless those benefits are greater.

• Excludes benefit increases from the definition of "new benefit increase" subject to the 5-year sunset provision in Section 15-198.
