Each school board must offer halal and kosher food options in public school cafeterias upon request, with all food certified by State-approved organizations or vendors.

State-owned or State-operated hospitals and penal institutions must offer halal and kosher food options upon reasonable notice request, complying with federal and State nutritional guidelines.

"Kosher" is defined as food supervised and prepared under strict compliance with Jewish religious laws and customs, including proper animal slaughter (shechita) as recognized by Orthodox Jewish entities and rabbis.

Persons, organizations, or vendors falsely representing food as halal or kosher, or misrepresenting themselves as certified vendors, are subject to penalties under the Halal Food Act or Kosher Food Act (Class C misdemeanor for first offense, Class A misdemeanor for subsequent offenses).

Provisions do not affect existing contracts entered into before the effective date of June 1, 2024.
