Illinois aggregates industry produces crushed stone, sand, and gravel used as primary ingredients in concrete and asphalt pavement for construction projects.

More than 230 aggregate mines operate in 70 Illinois counties, providing thousands of jobs in blue and white-collar positions.

Maximizing use of local aggregates reduces carbon footprint and construction costs by decreasing transportation distances, with sand and gravel costs doubling to quadrupling when transported 30-50 miles.

Senate strongly encourages the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois Tollway, and other state and local entities to maximize locally produced aggregates in construction projects when safe and practical.

Suitable copies of the resolution shall be delivered to the Secretary of the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Executive Director of the Illinois Tollway.
