John Edward Porter, former Illinois State Representative and U.S. Congressman, died on June 3, 2022, at age 87.

Served in the Illinois General Assembly from 1973 to 1979, passing legislation on carpooling incentives, pension restrictions for felons, and land trust transparency.

Represented Illinois's 10th Congressional District from January 22, 1980 to January 3, 2001, serving on the House Appropriations Committee and chairing the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies.

Founded the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, co-authored legislation creating Radio Free Asia, and chaired Global Legislators Organized for a Balanced Environment (GLOBE USA).

Illinois Senate extends condolences to his surviving spouse Amy McGuire Porter, seven children and stepchildren, and 14 grandchildren; a copy of the resolution will be presented to his family.
