Illinois Senate mourns the death of Gerald Mack "Andy" Anderson, who passed away on August 23, 2022, at age 99

Anderson served in the U.S. Army's 1st Infantry Division during World War II, fighting in Sicily, D-Day at Omaha Beach (June 6, 1944), and the Battle of the Bulge, earning two Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts, and France's Legion of Merit Medal

After the war, Anderson worked as a postal clerk starting in 1958, became active in the United Federation of Postal Clerks, and served as assistant director of the American Postal Workers' Union until retiring in 1986

Anderson established an annual nursing scholarship in memory of his wife Josephine and was twice inducted into PORTA High School Hall of Fame; he also sponsored a 10-day European trip for over 40 family members to visit World War II battle sites

Senate extends condolences to Anderson's surviving family members, including his sister Virginia Winkelmann, several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews
