Draper was a standout athlete at Harlan High School, breaking the state record in the 120-yard high hurdles and leading his team to the Illinois State High School Championship

Earned a bachelor's degree in Political Science from North Carolina Central University in 1971 and a Juris Doctor in 1974, becoming a 5-time College All-American in track and field between 1970 and 1971

Passed the Cook County Bar Exam in 1975 and worked as an assistant district attorney with the Cook County State's Attorney office before transitioning to private practice as a criminal defense attorney

Active member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, Grove Phi Grove, Kappa Alpha Psi, and the Cook County Bar Association; survived by sons Jason and Brandon Draper
