IL HB1633

Creates a State Education Equity Committee within the State Board of Education with representatives from 19 different organizations and stakeholder groups to work toward educational equity for all children from birth through grade 12.

Requires the committee to meet at least 3 times per year and submit recommendations to the General Assembly and State Board of Education by January 31, 2022, with annual progress reports due by December 15 each year thereafter.

Mandates that beginning with the 2024-2025 school year, every public elementary and high school American history or government course include instruction on Native American history, experience, contributions, genocide, tribal sovereignty, and treaties.

Adds Native American genocide to the curriculum requirement in the Holocaust and Genocide Study section, with instructional materials to be developed in consultation with members of the Chicago American Indian Community Collaborative by January 1, 2025.

Amends the History of United States teaching requirements to explicitly include Native American nations' sovereignty and self-determination, both historically and in the present day, with a focus on urban Native Americans.
