IL HB2490

Requires every public elementary and high school in Illinois to include a curriculum unit studying the U.S. civil rights movement from 1954 to 1968, including the natural law principles and nonviolent resistance tactics championed by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Mandates an additional curriculum unit studying acts of discriminatory injustice globally, including the Armenian Genocide, the Holocaust, Chinese labor in Cuba, the situation of Uyghurs in China, and the Rohingya of Myanmar.

Directs the State Board of Education to prepare instructional materials as guidelines for school boards to develop these curriculum units.

Allows individual school boards to determine the minimum amount of instructional time required for these units.

Takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
