HB2493 Summary

• Expands the Victims' Economic Security and Safety Act to include "any crime of violence" in addition to domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and gender violence.

• Employees of employers with 50+ employees entitled to 12 workweeks of unpaid leave; those with 15-49 employees entitled to 8 workweeks; those with 1-14 employees entitled to 4 workweeks during any 12-month period for purposes including medical care, counseling, safety planning, and legal assistance related to violence.

• Adds new leave provisions for attending funerals or alternative services, making arrangements, and grieving the death of a family or household member killed in a crime of violence, limited to 2 workweeks total and must be completed within 60 days of receiving notice of death.

• Employees taking bereavement leave under the Family Bereavement Leave Act have those benefits coordinated with this Act so they do not diminish total leave entitlements.

• Establishes new certification documentation requirements for deaths including death certificates, obituaries, or verification from mortuaries, funeral homes, or government agencies.
