HB2567 Summary

• Expands the definition of "firefighter" in Illinois Municipal Code to include persons employed by State universities, units of local government, or Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Systems, not just fire departments and fire protection districts.

• Broadens firefighter duties to encompass emergency medical technician (EMT), EMT-Basic (EMT-B), EMT-Intermediate (EMT-I), and advanced emergency medical technician (A-EMT) work, in addition to traditional firefighter and paramedic duties.

• Applies the expanded definition to both the Civil Service Commission procedures (Section 10-1-7.1) and the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners procedures (Section 10-2.1-6.3), with their respective alternative procedures.

• Applies the expanded definition to both the Joint Labor and Management Committee (JLMC) alternative examination procedures (Sections 10-1-7.2 and 10-2.1-6.4).

• Excludes part-time firefighters, volunteer firefighters, paid-on-call firefighters, civilian employees not routinely performing firefighter duties, and elected officials from the expanded definition.
