IL HB2970

Creates new offense of "unlawful publication of criminal activity" in Illinois Criminal Code (720 ILCS 5/26-8).

Prohibits knowingly recording or live-streaming a crime while it is being committed and transmitting or uploading the video to social media sites.

Defines "social media site" as an internet website where users can share content and connect with others of common interests.

Exempts law enforcement agencies, officers, businesses, and other persons posting videos for evidentiary value in civil or criminal proceedings or to seek identification of suspected criminals.

Penalty for violation equals the same sentence as the underlying crime being recorded and posted to social media.
