HB3225 - Veterans in Justice Act

• Allows veterans to voluntarily register their name and phone number with the Statewide 9-1-1 Administrator so that 9-1-1 and 9-8-8 operators can identify veteran callers and transmit that information to first responders, crisis responders, and deflection teams.

• Prohibits evidence of a person's veteran status from being admissible in criminal or civil proceedings except when essential to prove an element of a crime/defense, to prove witness bias, or when voluntarily disclosed by the defendant.

• Prohibits courts from using a person's veteran status to enhance criminal sentences and requires courts to consider available mental health treatment options for veterans with diagnosed mental illness during sentencing.

• Prohibits correctional facilities and county jails from classifying veteran inmates as more dangerous or treating them less favorably than other inmates based on veteran status and requires these facilities to make available veteran-related benefits and resources.
