HB3476 Summary

• Removes classification of first division vehicles registered as school buses from second division vehicle category in the Illinois Vehicle Code.

• Authorizes Secretary of State to issue separate school bus driver permits valid only for operating first division vehicles as school buses, in addition to existing permits for second division vehicles.

• Requires applicants for first division school bus permits to pass a first division written test and complete a separate classroom and refresher course developed by the Secretary of State in conjunction with the Illinois State Board of Education.

• Regional superintendents of schools, working with the State Board of Education, shall offer the required classroom and refresher courses for first division vehicle operation.

• Adjusts vehicle safety testing requirements so first division vehicles used as school buses are tested annually instead of every 6 months or 10,000 miles.

• Effective July 1, 2023.
