HB4045 Summary

• Allows individuals who are not U.S. citizens but are legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law to apply for firefighter positions in municipalities and fire protection districts.

• Noncitizen firefighter applicants remain subject to all other requirements and limitations applicable to other applicants, including residency, age, health, habits, and moral character standards.

• Amends the Illinois Municipal Code (Sections 10-1-7 and 10-2.1-6) and the Fire Protection District Act (new Section 16.06d) to implement the noncitizen eligibility provision.

• Takes effect January 1, 2024.
