IL HB4770

Amends Section 5-5-3.2 of the Unified Code of Corrections to delete the factor that "the sentence is necessary to deter others from committing the same crime" as a consideration for imposing imprisonment or more severe sentences.

Removes general deterrence as a sentencing consideration while maintaining 33 other aggravating factors courts may consider, including victim characteristics, offense circumstances, and defendant history.

Affects sentencing decisions under Section 5-8-1 and Article 4.5 of Chapter V of the Unified Code of Corrections.
