IL HB5065

Designates the act as the Safe Firearm Storage Act and amends Section 24-9 of the Criminal Code of 2012 regarding firearm storage requirements.

Requires all firearms to be stored outside of a person's immediate possession or control only if secured in a manner inaccessible to unauthorized users, either by a locking device other than the firearm safety or in a locked box or container.

Removes exceptions that previously applied when a minor under 14 years old used a firearm in lawful self-defense or obtained a firearm through unlawful entry of premises.

Establishes criminal penalties of a Class C misdemeanor with a minimum $1,000 fine for first violations and a Class A misdemeanor for subsequent violations.

Becomes effective January 1, 2025, and adds definitions for "firearm" and "immediate possession or control" to the statute.
