HB5197 Summary

• Repeals provisions of Public Act 102-1116 that allowed firearms restraining orders to last up to one year; restores maximum duration to 6 months and removes renewal provisions allowing additional one-year periods.

• Repeals the assault weapon ban that made it unlawful beginning January 1, 2024 for any person to knowingly possess assault weapons, assault weapon attachments, .50 caliber rifles, or .50 caliber cartridges.

• Repeals the ban on manufacturing, delivering, selling, or purchasing large capacity ammunition feeding devices.

• Repeals the prohibition on manufacturing or possessing devices, parts, or kits designed to increase the rate of fire of semiautomatic firearms.

• Repeals amendments to the Freedom of Information Act that exempted information concerning assault weapons endorsements received by the Illinois State Police from public disclosure; removes blank placeholder (hhh) in FOIA exemptions.
