IL HB5440

Amends the Township Code to require townships to expend at least 51% of funds deposited into the general assistance fund within the same calendar year.

Eliminates the general assistance tax levy for one calendar year if a township fails to expend at least 51% of deposited funds by the following calendar year, with the township treasurer required to notify the county clerk.

Reduces the general assistance tax levy to 0.05% effective January 1 if a township expends at least 51% but less than 70% of deposited funds by the following calendar year.

Restores eliminated tax levies to their previous percentage after the elimination year, and allows reduced levies to be increased again if the township meets expenditure requirements in subsequent years.

Takes effect immediately upon enactment.
