HB5640 Summary - An Act Concerning the United States Space Force

• Adds the United States Space Force to all Illinois statutory references to "armed forces," "armed forces of the United States," "U.S. Armed Forces," "United States Armed Forces," and "uniformed services" across multiple state laws and codes.

• Modifies the Flag Display Act to include the Space Force in the definition of U.S. armed forces for purposes of half-staff flag displays upon death of Illinois resident military members.

• Updates multiple employment preference and civil service statutes to explicitly include Space Force members in veteran hiring preference provisions, including the Secretary of State Merit Employment Code, Comptroller Merit Employment Code, State Treasurer Employment Code, Personnel Code, and State Universities Civil Service Act.

• Expands tax exemptions under the Use Tax Act, Service Use Tax Act, Service Occupation Tax Act, and Retailers' Occupation Tax Act to include active duty Space Force members who present valid military identification.

• Updates the Illinois Pension Code, Veterans Preference Act, Veterans Burial Places Act, Funeral Directors and Embalmers Licensing Code, Massage Licensing Act, Barber and Cosmetology Act, and Criminal Code to recognize Space Force service in military definitions and benefits provisions.
