HB5894 Summary

• Allows deputy chiefs and assistant deputy chiefs of police in non-home rule municipalities with more than 130,000 inhabitants to be appointed from sworn officers of any other municipality, provided the officer has at least 5 years of full-time police service.

• Permits deputy chiefs in non-home rule municipalities with 130,000 or fewer inhabitants to be appointed from sworn, full-time officers of any other municipality's police department, requiring at least 5 years of full-time service as a police officer.

• Limits deputy chief positions to one if the police department has fewer than 25 full-time officers, or two if it has 25 or more full-time officers in smaller municipalities.

• Allows deputy chiefs appointed from any rank to take promotional exams and advance to higher classified ranks without resigning from the deputy chief position.

• Takes effect immediately upon enactment.
