LCpl Maher enlisted in the United States Marines in August 2003 despite having a football scholarship to Southern Illinois University and was assigned to Weapons Company 1st Battalion 3rd Marines 31st MEU 1st Marine Division at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii

LCpl Maher received numerous military citations including the Purple Heart, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the AIA Hawaii Medal of Honor
