Illinois House urges the federal government to expand legal protections for asylum seekers arriving in Chicago and other U.S. cities without discrimination against those from the African diaspora.

Requests expedited employment authorization for asylum seekers to allow them to work and support their families, noting current restrictions prevent them from obtaining employment authorization documents for at least six months after arrival.

Acknowledges that asylum seekers arriving in Illinois in 2022 were sent by other states without advance notice and that Chicago, Cook County, and Illinois provided shelter, meals, legal services, healthcare, and other essential support.

Supports modernization of federal immigration law to welcome and assist immigrant communities across the United States.

Directs copies of the resolution be sent to the Illinois Congressional Delegation.
