K9 Officer Odin, a 20-month-old Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix with the Alton Police Department, was killed in the line of duty on August 22, 2024.

K9 Officer Odin graduated from the Illinois State Police Academy as part of Canine Class #89 in early May 2024, after joining the department in February 2024.

K9 Officer Odin and his partner Officer Allen Averbeck were struck by gunfire while attempting to apprehend a shooting suspect; Officer Averbeck sustained non-life-threatening injuries while K9 Officer Odin died from his wounds.

The Illinois House of Representatives mourns K9 Officer Odin's death and extends condolences to Officer Averbeck, the Alton Police Department, and their families.

The House thanks K9 Officer Odin and Officer Averbeck for their sacrifices in service to their community.
