Brent Hassert, born October 29, 1952 in Joliet, Illinois, was a landscape contractor and co-owner of Hassert Landscaping before entering public service.

Elected in November 1992 with 24,804 votes (59.8% majority), Hassert served as the first-ever state representative from the newly created 83rd Representative District representing Romeoville, Plainfield, and Lockport.

During 16 years in the Illinois House of Representatives (1992-2008), Hassert served as Republican vice spokesperson on the House Committee on Counties & Townships, vice chairman of the Committee on Environment & Energy, minority spokesperson on the House Committee on Gaming, and Deputy House Minority Leader (2003-2009).

Hassert helped shape legislation governing Illinois riverboat casinos, including a June 1999 law eliminating the requirement that Joliet casinos physically cruise the Des Plaines River, and served as co-chairman of the bipartisan Joint Committee on Administrative Rules (JCAR).

Brent Hassert passed away on August 29, 2024, and this resolution mourns his loss and honors his legislative legacy and service to Illinois.
