SB0058 Summary

• Beginning July 1, 2024, each State agency must track purchases of single-use plastic disposable foodware under $2,000 and establish goals to reduce such purchases.

• State agencies must submit a report on their tracking findings and reduction goals to the Governor and General Assembly by October 1, 2025.

• After January 1, 2025, State agencies and departments are prohibited from procuring disposable food service containers made from polystyrene foam and must use only compostable or recyclable foodware instead.

• After January 1, 2026 (or at contract renewal, whichever is later), vendors contracted by State agencies cannot provide polystyrene foam containers at State-owned or leased sites and must offer only compostable or recyclable foodware.

• Compostable foodware must meet ASTM D6400 standards and be certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute.
