SB0184 Summary

• Creates a new offense of "peace officer targeting" when a person commits certain crimes against another individual because of their actual or perceived employment as a peace officer, regardless of other motivating factors.

• Applies to 15 specified crimes including assault, battery, stalking, cyberstalking, theft, criminal trespass, mob action, disorderly conduct, harassment by telephone, and harassment through electronic communications.

• Classifies peace officer targeting as a Class 3 felony for a first offense and a Class 2 felony for a second or subsequent offense.

• Requires each county State's Attorney to submit an annual report to the General Assembly documenting the number of offenses where a peace officer was a victim, charges filed, and case dispositions.
