Advanced practice registered nurses (nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, clinical nurse specialists) may practice without a written collaborative agreement with a physician if they complete 250 hours of continuing education and 4,000 hours of clinical experience in their certification area.

Full practice authority includes prescribing legend drugs and Schedule II through V controlled substances, with ability to obtain Illinois controlled substance licenses and DEA numbers.

Schedule II narcotic drugs (opioids) require monthly consultation with a physician and can only be administered orally, topically, or transdermally; injections are prohibited.

Benzodiazepines may be prescribed independently for up to a 120-day supply, after which continued prescriptions require physician consultation.

Advanced practice registered nurses may not perform operative surgery but may assist in surgical procedures, and cannot provide services that state law or rules require physicians to perform.
