Beginning with the 2020-2021 school year, students must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or state financial aid application as a prerequisite to receiving a high school diploma from Illinois public high schools.

Students or their parents/guardians may alternatively file a waiver form created by the State Board of Education acknowledging they understand these applications and have chosen not to file.

School districts must require compliance with this requirement and provide support and assistance to help students and families complete applications or waivers.

School districts may award diplomas to students unable to meet the requirement due to extenuating circumstances if all other graduation requirements are met and the principal confirms good faith assistance efforts.

The requirement does not apply during the 2023-2024 school year.
