IL SB1622

Amends the Criminal Code of 2012 to add "emergency department staff" as a protected class under aggravated assault and aggravated battery statutes.

Defines "emergency department staff" as any clinical or nonclinical staff in emergency departments/rooms who may contact patients, including physicians, nurses, technicians, security staff, patient transporters, respiratory therapists, housekeeping personnel, secretaries, and pharmacists.

Defines "health care facility" as facilities licensed or organized under the Ambulatory Surgical Treatment Center Act, University of Illinois Hospital Act, Hospital Licensing Act, Nursing Home Care Act, Assisted Living and Shared Housing Act, or Community Living Facilities Licensing Act.

Provides enhanced criminal penalties for aggravated assault or aggravated battery against emergency department staff when they are performing official duties, assaulted to prevent performance of duties, or assaulted in retaliation for performing duties.

Takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
