Physicians may delegate care to physician assistants under collaborative agreements with no more than 7 full-time equivalent physician assistants, except in hospitals, hospital affiliates, or ambulatory surgical treatment centers.

Physicians may collaborate with more than 7 physician assistants in federal primary care health professional shortage areas with a score of 12 or greater, with required documentation available to the Department upon request.

Collaborative agreements with advanced practice registered nurses must be written to promote professional judgment commensurate with education and experience, with communication methods available in person or through telecommunications.

Anesthesiologists or physicians collaborating with certified registered nurse anesthetists must have training and experience in anesthesia delivery, participate in joint formulation of orders, and be physically present and available on premises during anesthesia services for emergencies.

Physicians are not liable for acts or omissions of physician assistants, advanced practice registered nurses, or prescribing psychologists based solely on signed agreements unless the physician had reason to believe the provider lacked competency or committed willful and wanton misconduct.
