SB1872 Summary

• Shortens probationary period for teachers hired on or after July 1, 2023 in Illinois school districts (excluding Chicago) from 4 years to 3 years before earning contractual continued service.

• Establishes three paths to contractual continued service based on performance evaluations: 3 consecutive "Proficient" terms, 2 consecutive "Excellent" terms, or 2 "Excellent" terms with prior service in another district.

• Changes notification deadline for non-renewal of probationary teachers from "45 days before end of school term" to "on or before April 15" for all teachers hired on or after the PERA implementation date.

• Applies changes to Section 34-84 (Chicago Public Schools), reducing probationary period from 4 years to 3 years for teachers hired on or after July 1, 2023 who meet performance standards.

• Effective date: July 1, 2023.
