SB2427 Summary

• Requires health care professionals with continuing education requirements to complete cultural competency training covering sensitivity and best practices for people in preferred languages, people with disabilities, immigrants, intersex individuals, people living with HIV, and LGBTQ+ people.

• Mandates at least 5 hours of cultural competency training for most health care professionals and at least 10 hours for physicians licensed under the Medical Practice Act of 1987 for every license renewal occurring on or after January 1, 2024.

• Allows cultural competency training hours to count toward minimum continuing education credit requirements and permits hours from other state licensure, professional accreditation, or institutional practice agreements to satisfy this requirement.

• Applies to professionals licensed or registered by the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation under 23 different health care practice acts, including nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, psychology, physical therapy, and social work.

• Authorizes the Department to adopt rules implementing and administering the cultural competency training requirements; effective January 1, 2024.
