School districts are now required (instead of permitted) to install door security locking means on entrance and classroom doors that meet specified safety and accessibility requirements.

Door security locking devices must allow engagement without opening the door, unlock from inside without keys or tools, comply with accessibility standards, and be no more than 48 inches above the floor.

Schools installing door security locking means must conduct employee training programs, maintain records of trained staff, and notify local law enforcement and fire departments of device locations and disengagement methods.

During law enforcement lockdown drills, schools must train students on how to use door security locking means as defined in the School Code.

Schools may install non-compliant devices only with written agreement from local law enforcement, the fire department, and the school board, with the agreement filed in the school's safety plan.
