IL SB3260

Amends the Illinois Election Code to prohibit political committees from making expenditures for payments to attorneys, expert witnesses, investigators, or others to provide a defense in a criminal case.

Adds this prohibition as item (12) to the existing list of prohibited expenditures under Section 9-8.10, which already restricts use of campaign funds for various personal and non-campaign purposes.

The State Board of Elections retains authority to investigate violations of prohibited expenditure rules upon receipt of verified complaints.

The Board may levy fines on any person who knowingly makes expenditures in violation of this provision and on any person who knowingly makes a malicious and false accusation of a violation.
