IL SB3286

Allows school districts to pay public transit fees for pupils as an alternative to providing free transportation, rather than exempting pupils for whom adequate public transportation is available.

Removes the restriction that prevented school districts from providing free transportation to pupils within 1.5 miles of school when walking constitutes a serious safety hazard if adequate public transportation is available.

Expands allowable transportation costs under Section 29-5 to include expenditures for paying public transit fees of pupils under Section 29-3.

Makes technical changes to the School Code sections governing pupil transportation in community consolidated districts, community unit districts, and other specified district types.

Effective July 1, 2025.
