• County boards or election commissioners may only use public school buildings as polling places if approved by the school board or local school council, rather than using them automatically.

• Election authorities must first use all convenient and available non-school public buildings before requesting a school building, and must submit a written request specifying the building, explaining why other buildings are insufficient, and identifying needed dates and times.

• School boards and local school councils must respond to polling place requests within 60 calendar days and may approve or deny based on their own rules and policies.

• Schools that approve polling place use are encouraged (but not required) to close or hold teacher institutes on election days with students not in attendance.

• The 2024 general election is designated as a state holiday and legal school holiday, with schools permitted (not required) to be made available as polling places if approved by the school board or local school council.
