Prohibits the Department of Healthcare and Family Services and contracted managed care organizations from denying coverage of nonopioid medications prescribed for acute pain in favor of opioid drugs, or requiring patients to try opioids first

Requires the Illinois Medicaid Preferred Drug List to give FDA-approved nonopioid pain medications equal or better coverage status compared to opioid or narcotic drugs

Bars designating nonopioid pain drugs as "nonpreferred" if any opioid drug is listed as "preferred" on the Medicaid drug formulary

Prohibits imposing more restrictive prior authorization or step therapy requirements on nonopioid pain medications than those applied to opioid alternatives

Applies immediately to any nonopioid drug upon FDA approval for pain treatment, even before formal review for inclusion on the state's Preferred Drug List
