Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 15, 1908, with a mission to promote unity among college women and provide service to all mankind.

Illinois is home to 44 Alpha Kappa Alpha chapters, consisting of 16 campus-based chapters and 28 alumnae chapters throughout the state.

The sorority's Central Region encompasses chapters in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Missouri, totaling 96 chapters focused on advocacy and service.

Notable members include Illinois State Senator Mattie Hunter, State Representative Kim du Buclet, and Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton.

Illinois members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will participate in AKA Day at the Illinois State Capitol on May 1, 2024, joining Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. for a joint Alpha Day to advocate for community priorities including Black maternal health, education, and suicide prevention.
