Joseph S. "Joe" Schaler of Lincoln passed away on May 29, 2024, and the Illinois Senate expresses condolences to his family and loved ones.

Schaler served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1969 and received a Purple Heart for his service.

Founded and chaired the Central Illinois Veterans Commission to assist homeless veterans and was active in creating Hope on 5th, a nonprofit providing counseling and emergency housing.

Served as member and prior commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 159 and was involved with the American Legion, VFW, Patriot Guard, and Lincoln Christian Church.

Named Citizen of the Year by the Lincoln Courier in 2016; survived by four daughters, three grandchildren, and numerous extended family members.
