John Cyril Mitchell passed away on June 14, 2024; he was born March 14, 1967, in Lanham, Maryland to Joseph and Camilla Mitchell.

Mitchell served as chief of staff to Reverend Jesse L. Jackson Sr. at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition beginning in 2004, after rising through roles as executive assistant, field director assistant, travel assistant, and scheduler.

Mitchell participated in direct-action campaigns for social, economic, and political fairness, including voting rights marches in Jackson, Mississippi, San Francisco, and Atlanta, and commemorative pilgrimages honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Mitchell was named Rainbow PUSH Employee of the Year and a Chicago Defender Men of Excellence honoree in 2011; he was also committed to community service including organizing volunteer efforts for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Mitchell is survived by his wife Corita, children John Baptiste and Camilla Elise Margaret, three siblings with their spouses, three nephews, and extended family and friends; the Senate extends condolences to his family and loved ones.
