John Polka of River Forest passed away on January 27, 2024, at age 81; born July 23, 1942, in Chicago to George and Susan (Dillon) Polka.

Taught biology at Fenwick High School for over 50 years as department chair, developing ecology and marine biology programs and instructing more than 5,000 students.

Created and coached Fenwick's cross-country team for 43 years starting in 1966, leading six teams to Chicago Catholic League titles and earning induction into both the CCL Coaches Hall of Fame and Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Recognized by the National Association of Biology Teachers, served as AP Biology College Board consultant, and volunteered at Shedd Aquarium after retirement.

Senate resolution mourns his passing and extends condolences to his niece Nancy Polka-Schneiter, nephew Richard (Sylwia) Polka, and the numerous Fenwick alumni and staff he inspired.
