Larry Shapiro, an English teacher and community organizer in Proviso Township, died on September 8, 2024, at age 79.

Served as chief of staff for State Representative Karen Yarbrough and communications director for former Maywood Mayor Henderson Yarbrough.

Organized community initiatives including a senior club with legal and healthcare services, bimonthly jazz nights, an Honor Roll Reception for District 88 and 89 students, and the Coffee with the Mayor program.

Helped recruit reform-minded candidates for Bellwood School District 88 and Bellwood Public Library Board positions.

Illinois Senate extends condolences to Shapiro's family and friends while recognizing his impact on countless students and community members.
