Senator Toro, born on Chicago's northwest side to a Puerto Rican immigrant family, worked as a teacher at Chicago Public Schools for eight years before entering government in 2023.

Championed legislation on early childhood education, housing affordability, reproductive health care, violence prevention, disability rights, bike safety, and workplace discrimination protections based on family obligations.

Passed legislation requiring police officer training to better interact with people with autism to minimize escalated encounters with law enforcement.

Plans to continue advocating for reproductive health care access, labor rights, education, and disability rights after departing the Illinois Senate.
