IL HB1027

Amends the Property Tax Code to allow the homestead exemption for veterans with disabilities to carry over to a deceased veteran's surviving spouse even if the spouse remarries, beginning with taxable year 2025

Surviving spouses must hold legal or beneficial title to the property and permanently reside on it to qualify for the continued exemption

Prior to taxable year 2025, surviving spouses lose eligibility for the exemption if they remarry

If a surviving spouse sells the property and purchases a new residence, they may transfer the exemption to the new home only if they do not remarry

Takes effect immediately upon becoming law
