IL HB1206

Establishes the Returning Police Officers Loan Repayment Assistance Program through the Illinois Student Assistance Commission to encourage former police officers to return to law enforcement in understaffed areas

Awards up to $6,000 per year for a maximum of 5 years or until student loans are paid off, whichever comes first

Requires applicants to have a law enforcement-related diploma from a public institution, necessary police certifications, outstanding student loans not in default, and commitment to work in a shortage area as determined by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board

Recipients must begin work in a shortage area within one year of receiving their first loan assistance payment

Prioritizes applicants who left law enforcement for reasons other than retirement or permanent disability; current officers in shortage areas are also eligible but receive lower priority

Effective July 1, 2026, beginning with the 2026-2027 academic year, subject to appropriation
